"It's a Cruel, Cruel" Swimsuit Season

"It's a cruel, cruel summer." Too true Bananarama.
I hate shopping for swimsuits.

Let me say that again.

I HATE SHOPPING FOR SWIMSUITS!!!!

It's wrong; it's demeaning; it's... *sob* necessary.

My Italian vacation is only a few short weeks away, and I (of course) waited until the last minute to shop for a swimsuit. Since I do not feel the need to suffer the humiliation of seeing my white legs and post-childbirth stomach, magnified in a 3-way mirror under fluorescent lighting, I have avoided any in-store try-ons.

But our last week in Italy is spent entirely on the Amalfi Coast and Capri. Which means lots of sun and ocean waves; and swimsuits, in the plural.

I need not one, but two swimsuits! I refuse to wear one suit over and over for 5 days straight. Ew.

On top of having to find those two swimsuits, I also have to bother about finding a good sunblock plus a great fake tanner. Ha! Doesn't that sound contradictory??

I'll be nice and white, while my stinkin'
Italian Husband will be browner than brown!
Jerk! Ha!
I tan extremely easily, rarely burning, but Parkinson's Disease has brought yet another new worry into my life; a higher risk of developing melanoma. Ugh!!! So no more soaking up those warm rays without a layer of SPF.

Being as busty as I am, it can be quite a challenge shopping for a suit that fits both my top and bottom. While I naturally gravitate toward one-piece suits, two-piece suits, at times, are more practical for my body type. And by two-piece I mean a very, very thin strip of skin showing between the top and bottom.

Husband says if you can't see my bellybutton, it's not worth it. I say if you can't see my bellybutton, you're grateful!! HaHa!

Vintage swimwear is so much more glamorous and flattering than the styles of today. I especially like the swimsuits of the 1940's and 50's. Higher waistlines and fuller coverage tops, provide me with as much security as I can expect, while wearing so little!

Don't you wish bathing suits still
cost under $5???
Some of my favorite old films are those that star the sensational, swimming Esther Williams. She would dive into pools and surface looking even more stunning than before she hit the water. Her suits always hugged her body, while still maintaining modesty. And thankfully, Esther Williams now designs her own line of retro swimwear. Each suit is beautifully made, and reflects her extensive knowledge of women and waves.

  1. I am partial to the Ahoy Mate and the sailor dress, but that may be too much nautical. :)

    1. My husband HATES the swim dresses, so I guess those are out! Bummer! Not that I always dress how he likes! ;) But I feel self-conscious enough in a swimsuit without knowing in advance that he doesn't like what he sees!

  2. I really like the Red Dolly suit, however, I have owned several Esther Williams suits, both when I was thin and at my current more plump size. Those Esther Williams suits are magical, man! They pull in your tummy, support the bust and make every gal look fantastic. If you look at the reviews on The Fedora Lounge, they make the slim girls look like they have more curves than they do and make the chubby girls look slimmer than they are. My favorite of the EW suits that I've owned were the cherry print sheath and navy with white polka dot sheath. I think they change the prints every few years, so those might not be available.

    1. I agree with you about Esther Williams suits! I have owned some in the past as well, and they always look fabulous. Husband likes the black and white one, I like the red and white- of course we don't agree!! Ha!! I owned a pink one with cherries before, and I adored it!!
      Thanks for your help!!!

  3. I would choose the classic sheath. I love Esther Williams swimsuits. I agree, vintage swimsuits were so much classier, so was everything! My friend, you are going on a vacation of a lifetime...Italy! The Italian coast? Oh gosh send me a postcard! I'm sure you will look great. Your health is important, so watch those rays and enjoy being with your husband on such a awesome vacation. I'm Italian and hope to go sometime.

I have never flown farther than Hawaii (starting from CA), and that was six years ago. We have been saving since then for this trip! My husband has been before, so he is excited to show me around.
I will make sure and take lots of pictures to post!!

  7. Buying swimsuits online can be SO tricky!!! I have struggled with this for ages but recently discovered Esther Williams and LOVE her stuff. I just bought one of her suit suits the other day to wear on the vacation I'm going on next week :D
Another great place to look at vintage inspired swimwear (especially one pieces) is PinupGirlClothing! They have incredible one pieces that will make you look like a beach goddess :D

  11. Your blog is so cute! I recently bought my first swim suit in over 20 years and I bought it online from Onestop Plus- a plus size company. I was so worried it wouldn't fit but it does! ♥

    1. Thanks! ;) I pretty much only shop online, because I like retro repro dresses, and they are impossible to find when you live in a little town! I keep my measurements written down, and it usually works out ok!
First suit in 20 years? That's awesome!! Do you love it?! I own lots of suits/shorts for camping with family, but I haven't had a nice one in many years. I adore the Esther William's one I got, but the thought of wearing it in ITALY, scares me to death! EEK!

  12. I do love my suit! It's a swim dress with a tummy panel and the top part holds everything in! I had stopped swimming in public because of HORRIBLE varicose veins in my legs- the worse ones I've ever seen! I finally had surgery on them last summer and one leg is still not done- that's what the 30 shots were about. My legs will never be pretty again but at least they're not freakish anymore!

    1. Holly- Oh my goodness that sounds painful! I have a couple hideous varicose veins myself, and a bunch of ugly red spider veins as well. I hate them, not just because of how ugly they are, but because they hurt! I hope the second surgery goes well! And I am sure your legs are not freakish! ;)
